Judd Gregg's Former Chief of Staff Endorses John Lynch - Makes for Awkward Lincoln Day Dinner

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Wed Sep 15, 2010 at 15:15:26 PM EDT

(Maiola? Whoa. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Joel Maiola, Judd Gregg's former chief of staff, became a Republican for Lynch today, along with former Executive Councilor Bernie Streeter, former State Senator Dick Green, and Republican activist Dr. Grif Dalianis.  Bonnie Newman and Walter Peterson also endorsed John Lynch again.

Bonnie Newman was chief of staff to Judd Gregg when Gregg was a congressman.

It says a lot when prominent members of a party are willing to publicly endorse the nominee of the other party. They could have kept quiet and cast a secret ballot for John Lynch.

Also, Maiola, Streeter and Green would have worked with Johnny Stephen when he was at HHS, so this clearly is a decision based on knowing both Governor Lynch and Johnny Stephen.

Here are more supporters from the Union Leader story:

Also on the committee are former Gov. Walter Peterson, who has supported Lynch in the past, as well as Jim Schubert, the retired head of an alternative education program in Manchester; Kimon Zachos, partner at Sheehan, Phinney, Bass + Green and a former Deputy Speaker of the New Hampshire House; Ted Connors, former Mayor of Portsmouth; Jack Middleton, partner at McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton in Manchester; Hank Stebbins, a partner at the Manchester law firm of Stebbins, Lazos, and Van Der Beken; Steve Griffin, owner of Issacson Steel in Berlin; and Grif Dalianis, chair of the State Veterans Council, whose wife, Linda, is an associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court.

The comments at the UL on line are starting already, and some people seem a little perturebed...

Bow Exceptionalism (0.00 / 0)
When Dubya was elected to his first term, Joel Maiola was reported to be on a first name basis with 'turd blossom', a.k.a Karl Rove. Afterwards the story goes, he was offered a WH job. He chose to stay in NH and keep his kids in Bow schools. I always respected that decision, because it was like you have said Kathy...we love it here. That's why we do what we do. The diarist is right on the money about what this says about Johnny Stephen and his screwing of NH.

I Don't Think We'll See... (4.00 / 1)
...comparatively well-known Democrats creating something like a Democrats For John Stephen For Governor Committee.  Though it was nice of Stephen to support a Democratic candidate for President once upon a time in his smarter days.  Wonder how many Republicans know that fact.

Maybe I should talk (0.00 / 0)
to Walter Mondale and Mike Dukakis about doing an auto call for John! He worked so hard on their campaign as a staff member I am sure these two great men would want to show their support for John!

John Stephen Fibbed About Dukakis (4.00 / 5)
As you may recall from the 2002 race, when asked about supporting Mike Dukakis in 1988, Johnny Stephen denied, denied, and denied again.

Unfortuantely for him, and I know this drives him crazy whenever I tell the story, I volunteered for the Coordinated Campaign out of the Elm Street office in 1988.  I spent the last week before the election there, since I had volunteered to take vacation time to help Joe Keefe's congressional campaign. Johnny was a paid staffer for the Democratic Party.

He idolized Mike Dukakis, He told me how the Dukakis immigrant family story inspired him because it was his family story.  The weekend before the election, there was a GOTV motorcade around Manchester.  Johnny was in a car covered in Dukakis signs, with a sound system blaring the Dukakis campaign theme song, America.

When asked about his support of Dukakis in 2002, he said he didn't vote for Dukakis. That told me all I needed to know about Johnny Stephen.  Instead of saying, "I've changed my views over the years, like Ronald Reagan", his instinct was to not tell the truth, and to pretend that he had not supported Dukakis. There was no reason to do that.

I've told that story here before, so I apologize for repeating myself, but as Rep. Splaine said, not everyone knows about Johnny's support fort Mike Dukakis - or how he refused to tell the truth about it.

Wonder if the UL took any pictures of the motorcade? (0.00 / 0)

Sometimes newspaper photo archives can be such a bothersome thing.

if I remember correctly I was driving an over-decorated car in the motorcade, I am sure it wood be a very goofy picture!

Kathy,

To add to your story...Johnny organized two carloads of NH folks to go down to cheer on Dukakis at some mega-event at Faneuil Hall in October 1988. Of all of us, N O B O D Y was more excited more than Johnny!

the term was coined supposedly by Paul Twomey from whom I rec'd this icy note:

bow exceptionalism(tm) does not immunize you from trade mark vilation lawsuits

I'm not sure what vilation means but I have a call into Arlo for explication.I think it has something to do with throwing away the garbage.

Rep. Baldasaro and Former Senator Amy Patenaude respond (4.00 / 1)
From the comment section after the article:

"To all of the so called Republicans who are involved with this committe [sic] to elect Lynch, you are a disgrace to all Republicans throughout the country.

You are not Republicans. You should just change your party affiliation and let the truth be known.
In my opinion that is treason within the Republican party and I believe the reason for this is there are personal agendas and many hands are open for favors.

As I always say, follow the money trail because why would a real Republican switch over just to support a Democrat Governor unless they were looking for a favor. They all must have been closet Democrats all this time, which is an insult to many of us Republicans who do not waiver in our beliefs. I have many Demoratic [sic] friends in Massachusetts (a Senator, Mayors & Reps), that I grew up with and even it was my last breath, I would not change over to the other side.

We have names for all of you traitors and it is called RINO (Republican in name only) and you should be treated as such by the Republican Party.

I have lost all respect for the Republicans who support Lynch and I ask all others to research and let's see who is benefiting from Lynch because a real Republican would not disgrace the Republican Family like they are.

Just my opinion!!!
- Rep AL Baldasaro, Londonderry"

and

"Shameful, absolutely shameful. Are you are you going to trash the rest of the party too?
Here are a couple of ideas for all you RINOs:work to make the party better instead of helping the Dems or how about becoming undeclared voters.
Nice job taking the media away from our Ovide and Kelly.
- Amy Patenaude, Henniker"

"Lost all respect" (0.00 / 0)
What an honor it must be for this fine people to have lost the respect of the utterly unrespectable Al Baldassaro... can someone who is not respectable offer or rescind his respects?

[ Parent ]
Baldasaro: Up the flagpole without a paddle! (4.00 / 2)
Al Baldasaro is the gift that keeps on giving.
I know firsthand the effect when Stephen shifted state responsibility for nursing home costs to property taxpayers.

For Rockingham County, where I live, the total increase is $4.3 million that he shifted in 2006 alone. The New Hampshire Association of Counties says Stephen's cost-shift to property taxpayers across New Hampshire was $21 million that year!

Furthermore, there is a privately run nursing home in Freemont that claims Stephen's department simply did not pay this New Hampshire small business $46,000 for caring for frail seniors. When confronted with not paying the bills and increasing property taxes, Stephen responded after a recent debate that it's "not my problem." Now that's the accountability we need in Washington!

A recent audit of Stephen's department (www.gencourt.state.nh.us/lba/audit.html) cited 28 significant deficiencies in internal control over financial reporting. The audit states that rate-setting for nursing homes is "nearly incomprehensible." No wonder Stephen believed he could get away with cost shifting then claiming he saved money. What's really galling is that Stephen is lecturing everyone that Washington needs to be transparent when his own department was not. In Washington, Stephen's "do as I say, not as I do" platform will fit right in.
