A Question Worth Repeating: Why is John E. Mum on Jamming?

by: Dean Barker

Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 23:26:53 PM EDT

I've heard this posed before, but it can't be asked enough, and good for Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand for bringing it front and center.  Why hasn't Senator Sununu said a word about the phone jamming crime committed by high-ranking Republicans expressly for his benefit?
"If I were in Sununu's shoes, I would have denounced the activity right away," Marchand said. "That's the minimal first step to prevent it from happening again. Few things can damage the democratic process more than suppressing the push to get out the vote."

Chuck McGee, the former state GOP executive director, served seven months in federal prison. Allen Raymond, the president of GOP Marketplace in Virginia, pleaded guilty and received a five-month sentence. Shaun Hansen of Idaho pleaded guilty in the related federal criminal case.

"I agree with Steve Marchand," said Norelli, who is also a co-chair of the Shaheen campaign. "Even if an elected official is not responsible for the behavior, they should make it clear they think it is unacceptable. It's speculation to say how much it affected the outcome. The fact is, it was illegal, and voters were disenfranchised."

Lawyer Paul Twomey represented the state Democratic Party in its phone-jamming lawsuit against the GOP, which settled for $125,000 about a year ago.

"We didn't get to the end of the trail in our litigation," Twomey said at the time.

Sununu press secretary Barbara Riley could not be reached for comment before deadline.

I dare say the only time we may ever hear John E. mention the crime that helped him get elected might be if he's forced to respond during a debate a year from now.

Good point! (If I get your drift) (0.00 / 0)
Duly clarified as to which Sununu is intended here.

No, I was too cryptic (4.00 / 1)
It occurs to me that John E. should be referred to as Senator* just as Roger Maris was called the Single Season Home Run Leader*.

The Maris asterisk was baloney IMHO; Sununu's claim to his office is on a par with President* Bush.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

The Expos left Montreal and became the Nationals.

The Gump Factor...But first Montreal, Minnesota, John Henry et al (4.00 / 1)
Jeffrey Loria, the former owner, ditched Montreal and bought the Marlins...there were claims of collusion from minority investors...they claimed the League made a deal to keep him whole, because he kept a losing franchise afloat until another Franchise became available.
In 1999, he bought a 24 percent interest in the Expos for $12 million, replacing managing partner Claude Brochu. After executing a series of controversial "cash calls" Loria became the team's majority partner at 94%. Loria was instrumental in the firing of manager Felipe Alou, but chose to be unavailable during the news conference.

One of Loria's first acts was to reiterate demands for a new park for the Expos to replace Olympic Stadium, of which he bluntly said, "We cannot stay here." He lost a considerable amount of goodwill with Expos fans when the team was not able to reach an agreement for television and English-speaking radio coverage during the 2000 season, as the Expos tried to increase their revenue from broadcast rights. Both the municipal and provincial governments balked at public financing for the proposed Labatt Park, in part because Olympic Stadium still hadn't been paid for 25 years after being built[1] (and wouldn't be paid for, as it turned out, until 2006).

In 2002, as part of an orchestrated move with Bud Selig and John W. Henry (owner of the Florida Marlins at the time), Loria sold the Expos to "Expos Baseball, LP," a partnership of the other 29 major league clubs, for $120 million. Henry then sold the Marlins to Loria for $158.5 million, including a $38.5 million no-interest loan from MLB. The deal was approved by the other owners before Loria and Henry even signed a contract.[2] Loria moved the Expos' entire front office and on-field staff to Florida. MLB's plans to contract the Expos and Minnesota Twins failed, though, as the Twins were compelled through legal action to fulfill the terms of their lease at the Metrodome. Loria's partners in the Expos ownership consortium filed a RICO lawsuit against Loria and Major League Baseball, but it eventually went to arbitration and was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.[3] The Expos were ultimately transferred to Washington, D.C. as the Nationals.

Loria's first move as owner of the Marlins was to fire 60 employees, replacing them mostly with former Expos staff. Marlins team president David Samson, Loria's step son, mentioned during the 2005 offseason that the Marlins were exploring attempts to relocate.

In 2006, Loria was a central figure in the firing of the Florida Marlins Manager Joe Girardi. He originally fired Girardi after Girardi asked him to stop alienating the umpires from his front row seat next to the Marlins' dugout, but was talked out of doing so until the end of the season. As with the Felipe Alou firing four years before, he chose to be unavailable during the news conference or the actual firing. Girardi, despite the loss of his job won the 2006 National League Manager of the Year.

In March 2007 Yale University announced that Loria had made a major gift to fund the construction of a new building for the History of Art department, adjacent to the Art + Architecture Building.

Gumpology. My cousin Josh is married to Loria's(former) step daughter. Later when he bought the Marlins and dumped Montreal, he also dumped his 2nd wife, for a newer model.

Josh and Nancy's wedding was at the Plaza Hotel. With his flair for the dramatic, Jeff brought out Mike Love and a few of the Beach Boys as a special event at midnight. My folks sat with Bobby Murcer, Red Holtzman and Dr. J.
Jeff's a real piece of work. He represented the Artist Larry Rivers, as well as some of the Dutch Masters. Yeah there's tons to be made in dead guys art commissions. They don't ask for much. He's used to getting his way. Known as the greediest owner in Baseball.

Next time, there may be no next time.
