New UNH poll: Shaheen +17 over Sununu

by: Colin Van Ostern

Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 16:19:56 PM EST

(Wonderful, but I'm not surprised, given the historic turnout we're seeing here and all over the country.  The days of Bush and his enablers are ending. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Shaheen     54
Sununu      37
Undecided    7

FAVS/UNFAVS (net)
Shaheen     57/23 (+34)
Sununu     46/35 (+11)

See also favs/unfavs for Gregg, CSP, Bradley, Stephen, and Hodes....

Taken 1/18-27.  MoE +/-4.2%.

More (Dean): Here are some screenshots from the .pdf to help drive home this news. First, look at how flat this race has been for half a year now - John E. can't get no satisfaction traction:

Now check out the numbers, particularly how Shaheen is soundly beating Sununu among undeclareds:

Although I don't trust polls at all, this is a good indication that Shaheen is the best candidate to beat Sununu in the fall.

Hope the campaign uses his donors against him, if you look at the PACs that donate to him, you can beat him just on that, Oil, RX, 'Energy', other usual suspects.

Can't wait to see those two debate this fall.

Did see that Halliburton donated to his campaign

HALLIBURTON COMPANY PAC 05/25/2007 1000.00 (FEC.GOV)

Question, if the Halliburton CEO and Chairman are located in their Dubai HQ does it make it illegal to contribute to US Elections (they do have a HQ in Houston but corporate HQ is in Dubai now I believe.)

I believe Halliburton is still legally incorporated in Delaware. (0.00 / 0)
Therefore, it is technically a US company.

Is there an election lawyer in the house? (0.00 / 0)

My understanding (4.00 / 1)
and IANAL:
  1. Corporations cannot make campaign donations, period. Regardless of where they are incorporated.
  2. Like any other American citizen, a corporate executive who is a US citizen can make campaign donations.
  3. Legal contributors can also join together to pool their donations into a PAC - which might be called "Treehuggers PAC" or "Halliburton PAC." The PAC is not tied to the corporation.
  4. So: no problem with these contributions.

A very low number of undecideds. (0.00 / 0)

Perhaps the verdict is in on our junior Bush enabler.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

Bush enabling will be the issue that cripples him. (0.00 / 0)
Bush is hated in NH, with only 26% approving.  Sununu votes with Bush over 90% of the time.

Remember Lincoln Chafee?  On election day 2006, the 2/3 of Rhode Island voters said they liked the guy.  In fact, Chafee's biggest claim to fame in his Senate career had been opposing Bush from within his own party, being the only Republican Senator to vote against AUMF-Iraq.  But he was a vote for Republicans to hold the technical majority in the Senate, so the people of Rhode Island, who overwhelmingly liked him personally, kicked him out.

Now we ask ourselves: considering that Sununu is known for voting WITH Bush, not against...do 2/3 of New Hampshirites actually like him?  I doubt it.  Even if they do, I'll bet they don't like him enough to let him sit in their Senate seat for another six years.

Sununu has been showing up in New Hampshire, trying to funnel grants to various agencies, and all those other things, but it does not seem to be helping, does it?  Of the folks listed in the poll (it excluded Governor Lynch's numbers), Jeanne Shaheen had the highest net favorability of all, at a plus 34%.  CSP was second with 26%, Gregg third with 25%, and Hodes at 19%. The fact that Governor Shaheen has a plus 34% shows that the reservoir of good will towards her in NH remains very, very high.

CSP's favorable rating was up to 43% from 33%, which is  really great; the Republican effort to go after her seems to be helping, not hurting, her.

You scared me with that (0.00 / 0)
19% for Hodes until I realized I skipped over the word "net"!

Glad to see on the .pdf that his favs have been rising steadily since taking office.

Why am I always the skunk at the garden party? (4.00 / 4)
I admit it feels great to see numbers like these, but please don't think defeating John Sununu is going to be easy. Please don't be complacent. Jeanne Shaheen will need all of your help to beat Sununu. Sununu's friends in the oil and gas industries are going to do everything they can to help him keep his Senate seat. As Kathy and Paul know all too well, his friends were willing to commit federal crimes to help him last time - and in 2002, but for a couple of weeks in October, Sununu was always ahead in the polls. God only knows what they will be willing to do this time, when the environment ain't so good for him.

No, it won't be easy. (0.00 / 0)
But it is fun to see such numbers, especially as they aren't form ARG.

As it won't be easy, I sure hope Sununu's record of achievement we've been compiling here will be regularly used and perused.

Is Buckey still in? (0.00 / 0)
If so, why wasn't he included in the poll?  If not, disregard this entire post.

answers (4.00 / 1)
1. yes
2. you need to check with UNH; he also did not poll any candidates against Hodes.

Since "other" and "undecided" (0.00 / 0)
are only polling at 1% and 7% respectively, it doesn't look like there's a lot of room for Buckey to carve out for himself.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps because no one has heard of him? (4.00 / 1)
Jeanne is up by 18 points for a reason -- people value her leadership.  They respect her competence and progressive values.

This respect was earned in six years as our governor.  It was earned by expanding kindergarden access, providing health care to working poor children, fighting for civil rights, and protecting New Hampshire's environment.

John Sununu will be a tough opponent.  His family is 9-0 in New Hampshire elections during the past quarter-century, and his folks won't go quietly.  Having McCain at the top of the ticket should help him.  We need our best candidate in this race -- one that has already earned the trust of the electorate.

Jay Buckey is a good guy, but he is a virtual unknown outside the Blue Hampshire family.  If he wants to be polled -- much less serve as a viable candidate -- he has a lot of work ahead of him.

[ Parent ]
I haven't been paying much attention to the Senate race (4.00 / 1)
but I'm pretty sure that the last time I checked, Buckey hadn't dropped out (although I had this strange feeling today that he had for some reason).

I don't have any personal relationship with his candidacy and will admit that I haven't seriously considered him either - not bitterness but definitely dismay at Marchand's early exit.

That being said, I find it mildly rude to pretend like Shaheen's primary opponent isn't even there.  Apparently I got a call from her today while I was out, saying she wanted to chat, so it seems to me that she's aware of his presence and isn't taking things for granted, so why should we?

We can't blame anyone here for the UNH survey deciding not to poll what you are calling a "virtual unknown."  However, I do take issue with you putting words in the mouths of the voter's polled.

For people like me and the one you're responding to, who aren't very familiar with either candidate, your approach strikes me as impertinent and may be a disservice to the Shaheen campaign.

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship

Do you have any tips? (4.00 / 1)

Andy, do you get those strange feeligs very often? If you do, do you have any tips on who is going to win at Daytona this weekend, and also, I would like to discuss my March Madness pool selections in a few weeks!

Buckey (0.00 / 0)
Whatever, he is in my heart. As we go forward, remember the income tax veto and the veto of the death penalty. Winning is fine but memory is also cherished. It is the nature of character that it is repeated.

"The Nature of Character" (4.00 / 3)
When Jeanne Shaheen ran for governor she said she supported the death penalty and said she'd veto an income tax. In my book, character is keeping your word.

That is McCain's greatest strength. (0.00 / 0)
Agree or disagree, you know where he stands.

Sorry, that train has left the station.

One of our jobs this fall is going to be to show all the independents out there that McCain flip-flops just like any other politician. Don't drink that flavor of Kool-Aid, my friends, consistency is definitely not a McCain virtue.

It's a perception that continues. Don't take it to mean I have an affinity to McCain (0.00 / 0)
