(Happening right now live in Michigan.  A good choice in time and place, I think.  I suppose we'll use this as a reaction thread. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Edwards for AG (4.00 / 3)
He would be an awesome attack dog, going after Corporate Crime, Polluters, Labor Abuses, whatever Barack and he felt needed doing.

I shortened your title (0.00 / 0)
so it would fit better in the front page window.

I imagine this will be a well-used thread, so I wanted to make it easy to read and click.

JRE Endorsement (4.00 / 4)
I quess Obama was the first to promise jet skiis and a"spy job" using jet skiis.

Ha! (4.00 / 5)
That jet ski segment w/Colbert was the best piece of political humor of the 08 season thus far.

And I'm w/Jonny B - Edwards for AG!

Good timing. (4.00 / 2)
Most of the time since Edwards withdrew from the race, his endorsement wouldn't have made that much of a splash. This was impeccably timed for maximum leverage.

Very dignified remarks about HRC (4.00 / 1)
from Edwards.

Lobbyists (4.00 / 2)
I always admired both Edwards and Obama's fight to take on the DC special interests. When I worked down there in 04 the disconnect between Washington and those outside the beltway absolutely disheartened me. Edwards and Obama really spoke to me on this issue.

Today is NOT a good day for Washington lobbyists!

From his speech with Ovbama in Michigan (0.00 / 0)
Huge crowd..."this is our moment" "with Barack Obama in the White House" we can take back America !
Onward to victory in the Fall

I'm off,a little late, to Town Meeting. We held a Democratic Select-person seat and two schoolboard seats by 53 votes...

Edwards for VP &

The Edwards' delegates

So what, you've been asking, becomes of Edwards' delegates?

Edwards still has 16 pledged delegates who have already been named -- eight from South Carolina, four from New Hampshire, and four from Iowa. (He is projected to get an extra two or three more at the June 14 Iowa state convention.)

Pledged delegates aren't bound to their vote, so they can now switch to Obama -- as they will likely do, at Edwards' urging.

But there's also nothing keeping them from choosing Clinton. As of now, their situation is analogous to that of  superdelegates.

His New Hampshire and South Carolina delegates are listed after the jump.

Edwards Delegates, by state:

New Hampshire:

District Level Delegate: Joshua Denton, (Portsmouth)
District Level Delegate: Deborah Bacon-Nelson (Hanover)
Pledged Leader Elected Official: Senator Peter Hoe Burling (Cornish)
At-large Delegate: Representative Sharon Nordgren (Hanover)

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

My sympathy to those delegates, (4.00 / 1)
who will no doubt be lobbied just a tad.

If I didn't know better I would swear Karl Rove is sitting at his home computer writing most of the emails I get from the 40 or so people who send me their not very compelling email each day.

2012 starts today.

Thank you, John Edwards (4.00 / 1)
A class act and my vote in the NH Primary.
Obama, take the endorsement and run with it.
Hillary, it's time to quit. You're toast. Stop hurting our chances vs. McCain.

...the Doo Dah Man once told me you've got to play your hand. Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.

Cold Shot (0.00 / 0)
On Countdown, KO reveals that the Edwards endorsement was timed to coincide with Hillary's meeting with her supporters in her DC home.

Imagine eveyone thumbing their Blackberrys as Hillary is giving them the "It's all good" schpeal.

Perfect timing... (0.00 / 0)
This plus 5 new SDs for Obama today.  Let's keep pushing for the next 3 weeks and be unified at the end.  i don't have an issue with Hillary staying in for now, but after June 3rd, it will be patently obvious, notwithstanding any earth shattering incidents, who our nominee is.

Customer: "Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now."

Pet-shop owner: "No, no he's not dead, he's -- he's resting! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian blue, isn't it, aye? Beautiful plumage!"

After an appropriate wait, she steps from the plane and pretends to wave to a crowd of supporters; in fact, she is waving to 10 photographers underneath the airplane's wing. She pretends to spot an old friend in the crowd, points and gives another wave; in fact, she is waving at an aide she had been talking with on the plane minutes earlier.

VP/AG (4.00 / 2)
Though John Edwards said last month he would decline a vice presidential nomination, the New York Times reports that "privately, he told aides that he would consider the role of vice president and favored the position of attorney general, which would appeal to his experience of decades spent in courtrooms as a trial lawyer in North Carolina; and his desire to follow in the footsteps of Robert F. Kennedy, one of his heroes."

Two Questions (0.00 / 0)
1) What was Edwards' payoff for endorsing Obama the day after the West Virginia Primary results? I hope it was something about reducing poverty rather than a position in a new administration and I hope that Edwards got the promise in writing.

2) Why was Elizabeth not there at his side for the announcement?

Halving poverty

An Obama aide says the goal of halving poverty in 10 years was key to Edwards' endorsement.

I can't believe (0.00 / 0)
you don't see the irony in
having our current favorite Southern White guy(okay a straight one Paula) endorse after a show of the latent racism in America...yeah we got problems but John endorsing Barack is not one of them. I in no way think the date was Edwards' choice, as much as Naral's on the same day. It was the strategy of a winning campaign.

Timing of JRE's endorsement (0.00 / 0)
Yes it killed the afterglow of WV for Hillary, but I was thinking. Which is dangerous.

If Obama can pull in Edwards delegates between yesterday and May 30th, it will allow Obama to better negotiate the DNC ruling on the 31st.

Sound reasonable?

Curious (0.00 / 0)
John Edwards had been saying for two weeks prior to the endorsement he was in no hurry. Here he is on Larry King on May 12, the night before West Virginia explaining why he hasn't endorsed:

LARRY KING: You have not endorsed, senator. Some might say as a major figure in the party at this point, don't you have a responsibility to endorse?

JOHN EDWARDS (D), FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: No. I think that what I have a responsibility to do is make sure that the Democrats' message and our cause is heard and that we're united in the fall. You know, myself, Al Gore, I think there are some others who haven't spoken out yet about this nomination battle.

I think we have two great candidates. I have such an extraordinarily high opinion of both of them. You watch sort of what's happened in the past, I think that some of the endorsements as opposed to helping unite have contributed to the divide. And what I don't want to do is contribute to the divide. I mean, we had a primary in North Carolina where I live. I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I voted in that primary. So obviously, I made a choice in that vote. But at least for this moment, I think the reasonable thing for me to do is let voters make their decision.

Doesn't sound like someone who was going to endorse Obama two days later.

JonnyBBad, what do you hear about Elizabeth?
