Epping selectmen may vote Tues. to ban Carol Shea-Porter

(This is a rare moment of Republican message control malfunction.  First, the Tea People complain about lack of town halls.  Now, the opposite.  The underlying strategy is the same, however; no matter how much more of a leader on veterans' issues Carol has been compared to Jeb and the rest, she's insufficiently patriotic because she's... Carol. - promoted by Dean Barker)

This just in from Mark Vallone, in Epping, thanks to Bill Duncan:

There will be an article in the Union Leader tomorrow [Tuesday, Dec. 22] stating that the selectmen may vote to reconsider/retract an invitation it had approved to let Carol Shea-Porter hold a town hall in Epping next month.

Long story short.... there are Navy seals who will have a trial by a court martial for charges relating to the capture of a very evil al-Quaeda operative that involved charges the suspect may have been assaulted while in custody in Iraq.  Republican Rep Dan Burton has circulated a letter to other US Reps demanding the Defense Dept. quash the charges.  Carol did not sign the letter and so now her patriotism is being questioned.

Carol Shea-Porter has strongly supported our veterans and soldiers. A member of the Armed Services Committee, she has brought increased medical care to NH veterans.  She has sponsored legislation to stop the burning of toxic wastes in Iraq and Afghanistan that has caused widespread medical problems for returning veterans.  She sponsored an amendment to hold defense contractors accountable for shoddy work such as poor wiring that has killed and injured US soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  She has voted to approve increases in the defense budget and has traveled to both Iraq and Afghanistan to visit soldiers.  These are just a few of the things Carol has done on behalf of our men and women in the armed forces.

I think the selectmen will back down if we show up with a group to speak our case.  How ridiculous that the selectmen want to interject themselves into Defense Department issues. How more ridiculous that, instead of looking forward to address their concerns directly to Carol Shea-Porter, they want to tell her to go away.  How childish!  How irresponsible to want to deny Epping residents their Constitutional right to directly petition the government- face to face- to redress their grievances!  

Adding (Dean): This strikes me as the perfect opportunity to show Carol your support.

Archambault, a Republican, insisted that his effort to block Shea-Porter wasn't about politics.

Radice said the congresswoman has confidence in the military "to do right by their own members" and that she was told that the Navy SEALs "requested this proceeding."

Case closed.

Grandstanding is what it's called. It seems the only people left (4.00 / 1)
in the Republican party are attention-seekers who, by definition, can never get enough.  Our mistake is in wasting time on them.
These selectmen (4.00 / 1)
make themselves and their town look stoopid.

They are elected to attend to town business, not to make "statements" of a national political nature. In our town, the selectmen are non-partisan. Towns have enough to deal with in these times without being used for pathetic partisan Republican antics.

This is more ridiculous than Jack Barnes and the yoga thing.

I hope the good citizens of Epping remember this at election time.

Military leaders generally want to have possible misbehavior prosecuted - at least once it is public knowledge. Otherwise captured Americans are more likely to be tortured themselves.

This is about right-wing politicians in Epping and Washington putting soldiers in harm's way, to score cheap political points.

Try finding that attention.  It starts with Human Events and expands almost entirely through right wing blogs and Fox.

However, it's from the AP that we learn that the service members initially were to be reprimanded but chose to escalate by demanding a court marshal.  Then, presumably, someone representing them contacted the right wing press and, maybe, Dan Burton?

The "unpersuadables" are forever lost. Luckily, they are in the minority. Facts are stubborn things, as they say. Most will see the facts and plainly see, Carol is second to none.

Dan Burton fathered a child with another woman, long before the blue dress became an issue - yet continued to run for office (despite being known as a philanderer) on the "family values platform.) Interestingly, the left wing media gave him a pass.

Why would anyone take this guy seriously - never mind re-elect him for 13 terms?

for not signing the letter.  You can support the military (which she has done and will continue to do) without playing partisan politics.  Reading the facts of the case, the military is right to court marshal these SEALs.  Our military should be held to the highest standards, regardless of who their prisoner happens to be.

Members of Congress send a lot of letters.  You can't hold them responsible for not putting their name on every statement you agree with.
