Blue Hampshire Endorses Ann McLane Kuster

by: Blue Hampshire

Thu May 20, 2010 at 05:13:20 AM EDT

Nearly four years ago Blue Hampshire was born following a groundswell of political blogging that had sprung up in a successful effort to support Paul Hodes' election to New Hampshire's second congressional district.

Today, we believe the best person to continue the work in Congress begun by Representative Hodes is attorney and advocate Ann McLane Kuster.

As Laura Clawson pointed out on Daily Kos, Ann McLane Kuster "supports the public option, the Employee Free Choice Act, non-punitive immigration reform, and environmental regulation. Not only does she want to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell, she wants to repeal DOMA, and she worked to help bring marriage equality to New Hampshire."

In addition, Kuster has been a vigorous advocate for health care access and affordability, especially and unwaveringly so for women's reproductive health. From Ann's website: "Ann believes a woman and her medical care provider should be making decisions about her health care, not the politicians in Washington. She is committed to ensuring that the anti-choice movement doesn't use abortion to derail health care reform, and also that they don't use health care reform to restrict a woman's right to choose."

Ann McLane Kuster headed the Women for Obama organization in the state during the primary and presidential campaign. An early supporter of the President, she also disagrees with some of his policies: "While I am pleased that the President has decided to set a timetable for drawing down our troops in Afghanistan, I do not agree with the decision to first send 30,000 additional troops.  It is not clear that sending more combat troops is the best way to meet the real threat, as Al Qaeda disperses to Pakistan and other countries.  This is particularly important as our military has been strained by six years of fighting in Iraq and eight years of fighting in Afghanistan."

We believe that, in addition to her strongly progressive views, Ann Kuster also has the clearest path to victory in the fall. Her campaign arc thus far has been exemplary, demonstrating vigor, discipline, and attentiveness.  If Kuster runs her congressional office at all the way in which her campaign has been run so far, the citizens of New Hampshire's second district will indeed be fortunate.

Kuster has slowly but efficiently built up local grassroots support, viable fundraising, and national endorsements.  Of the former, we were impressed at how she had reached out to voters across the district with a "30 House Parties in 30 Days" tour.  Jennifer Daler, for example, decided on her support at a New Boston house party, where her warmth and ease with people were apparent.  Jennifer asked Kuster whether she could persevere through a grueling general election, as she's so, well, nice.  Ann handily convinced her she is tough enough to handle whatever Charlie Bass or Jennifer Horn can dish out.

Ann and her campaign have also openly engaged with the New Hampshire netroots, providing Blue Hampshire with a video introduction, for example.  It is clear she can navigate both the traditional world of door knocking and handshakes as well as the emerging political communities of new media.

Finally, we believe Ann Kuster's background and beliefs represent a uniquely unifying bridge between the common sense Yankee Republican that once used to populate New Hampshire and today's progressive Granite State values.  She can, and has already, brought together a wide coalition of supporters from the big tent of the Democratic party, while at the same time bringing over undeclared, and even Republican, voters who support middle class values and pragmatic solutions to our nation's problems.

We believe Ann McLane Kuster will be a clear and independent voice for New Hampshire citizens in Congress, and we are proud to endorse her.

Finally, on the basis of this endorsement, we have added Ann Kuster to our ActBlue Hampshire page.  Please consider clicking the link and giving to the Kuster campaign today to ensure a victory for progressive values in the fall.

Note: This endorsement represents the full and unanimous support of Blue Hampshire's managing editors and contributing writers: Dean Barker, Laura Clawson, elwood, Jennifer Daler, Mike Hoefer, and susanthe.  Furthermore, we strongly acknowledge what a step backwards it would mean to New Hampshire's second district to be represented again by a nominee from today's Republican party, and so we look forward to working for whoever is elected our Democratic nominee.

I'm off the fence too! (4.00 / 3)
I agree that Annie McLane Kuster is far and away the best choice to ensure that the progressive values of the people of the Second District continue to be well represented in Washington. Both her positions on issues and the way she has intensively engaged with the voters during the campaign demonstrate that she will fight for the interests of people of the district and fight the financial predators who have run Washington for far too long.

(It also doesn't hurt that she has shown the wisdom to pick the bestest campaign director in the world and a great staff. Who you chose to surround yourself with tells a lot about what you will be able to accomplish if elected).

here here (4.00 / 1)
It made my morning to read this ringing endorsement. I introduced Ann to BH in February of 2009. Since then she and her most able staff have been hard at work. As one of Paul Hodes earliest supporters, I knew from the signals he was sending that he was going to run for Judd Gregg's seat. Ann is the best person I know to keep the seat Blue, because she best understands and will best represent the values and beliefs of New Hampshire's 2nd CD.

Amazing staff work (4.00 / 3)
After the house party we held here in Walpole, I got several startled phone calls from friends who had attended.  Every single one said the same thing.  No one had EVER had someone call them up the day after a political event and thanked them for coming.  They were so impressed that Abby from Annie's staff had made the effort to do so.  As a result, she has a number of dedicated supporters who will tell others of their positive experience.

I think it says a lot for the campaign and for how she would represent her constituents, if elected.  Especially in this time when there will be more money thrown at the campaigns than ever before, I think this is the best campaign strategy at all levels.  After all, what we have to do in the end is raise votes, not dollars.  The best way to do that is personal contact, one voter at a time.

I ask because the last time Kuster got an endorsement the Swett campaign went with exactly the same one-note line of attack.

It is disappointing.

But at the same time it tells me that our endorsement matters, and that is a good thing, given the time and effort all six of us put into looking closely at all three candidates

I suspect the vast majority of Swett supporters will work hard for Kuster when she wins the primary, or vice versa.

The real triumph of the special interests will be with a Republican back in the second district, assisted by the toxicity of primary activists.

I won't expect you to believe this, but I have over time come to like Katrina Swett more and more.  I simply believe that in Ann Kuster we have a candidate better on the issues and more electable.

Smear tactics? What would Harry Truman say - nice quote though. (3.33 / 6)
This is a complete smear.  You are listing clients of the law firm Annie works at, NOT HER clients - I happen to know her and I know she has never billed a single minute to most of these folks. In reality, there are tens of thousands of NH voters who have had their lives touched by things Annie actually DID do, like help create the UNIQUE college savings plan, the Medication Bridge program, and help ban power companies from burning toxic demolition debris in NH (all of which she mentions at her house parties).  When people vote, they will trust their own experience with real things that have actually helped their lives, far more than some smear you write on a blog or some distortion-filled attack ad by the Swett campaign.  You might think a guilt-by-association hit like this helps muddy the waters, but it just makes your candidate look bad.  Why do you think Katrina Swett has, according to recent polling, basically has the worst approval ratings in the state of New Hampshire?  Maybe voters don't trust her because of the constant distortions like the one you are trying to spread around now.

If you have any real questions about who Annie will represent, you should be glad to know that she has raised more money in this campaign from NH citizens than anyone ever to run for Congress before, while Katrina has basically raised all off her money from PACs and big out of state interests (something like 95% of her money?).  When she ran against Charlie Bass last time he beat her by nearly 20 points.  Do you want to see that happen again? Annie is one of the most honest, ethical, hard working, down-to-earth people I know and NH will be well served by her intelligence and professionalism in Congress, to say nothing of her knowledge and dedication to NH.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I worked part-time last year to help Annie get her campaign off the ground, but I haven't worked for her since 2009.

I just returned from a two week vacation.  Unless I missed something, I am not aware of any "distortion-filled attack ad" by the Swett campaign.  If you cannot provide evidence, then I will assume that you are lying.  And I will troll rate you for that.

You degrade Annie and yourself when you go negative.

Thank you.

(Oh, and as for your latter point, Katrina lost by a far smaller margin -- and in a far more Republican year -- then Paul Hodes did two years later.  Good thing he never ran again!)

There's a significant difference. (4.00 / 1)
In 2002, Swett outspent Bass by a good margin. In 2004, Hodes got in late and was underfunded. He made very clear changes between 2004 and 2006. I've yet to hear the case for equivalent changes Swett has made.

[ Parent ]
How about this? (0.00 / 0)
Mark Fernald topped the ticket, Democrats were nearly wiped out across the state (six state senators), and Jeanne and Martha were clobbered, too. Horrid year for all Dems.

Also, don't make so much of Katrina's financial advantage. The pharmaceutical lobby spent more than $500k in a pro-Bass independent expenditure campaign (funnelled through the "United Seniors Association"). And I know that you wouldn't criticize Katrina for drawing the fire of THOSE insidious bastards.

...and have no idea what "the trifecta is."

It's hard to deny that 2002 was the worst Dem year in NH in the past 50 years. And, while I like Mark very much and knocked on many doors for his campaign, he ran a horrifically underfunded campaign and was slaughtered by Craig Benson. Since he led the ticket, that hurt everyone, not just Katrina.

Lack of change. (0.00 / 0)
That's what I was struck by -- no growth on Ms. Swett's part since we interviewed her prior to her dropping out in favor of Jeanne Shaheen.  Ever since CSP came on the scene, I've been convinced that the hallmark of a good politician is getting better over time.
The Republican strategy of sticking to the preconceived agenda to demonstrate constancy and consistency only works with a very select population that doesn't like change.

Support for the Endorsement of Ann McLane Kuster (4.00 / 3)
As an Iraq War combat veteran using the GI Bill to attend law school, I am glad that Blue Hampshire has endorsed Ann McLane Kuster to represent the Second Congressional District. Not only is she the most progressive candidate, Ann has shown sound leadership and judgment in questioning the troop escalation in Afghanistan.

I Disagree (4.00 / 3)
I respect Ann McLane Kuster.  She has run a stong campaign, and, while I don't know her, she comes across as a good person and a progressive.

The question of Ms. Kuster's lobbying career has been raised in this thread, both in a positive and negative way. I'd rather not get into it -- not helpful for anyone.  (Besides, my views on lobbying for corporate interests are pretty well known.)

I do know, however, that Katrina Swett has devoted years of her life to lobbying for human rights at home and around the world -- against dictatorships, religious persecution, and other causes that fly in the face of our values.  I have known her for 20 years, and she is a strong and passionate supporter of health care reform, environmental protection, labor, economic justice, women's rights, gay rights, and other issues that define our moral fiber.  She is extraordinarily talented, and will make an outstanding congresswoman.

I respect BH's managing editors, but BH is not a monolithic community.  I am a member of this community, too, and your endorsement does not speak for me.  In my opinion, Katrina Swett is our strongest candidate to defeat Charlie Bass, and I encourage all Hampsters to watch her carefully before making a final judgment.  She will impress you, as she has me.

I look forward to hearing more from Katrina Swett supporters (4.00 / 6)

Like Dean, I have become more impressed with her during the campaign, and can easily support her in the general - though I've made up my mind in the primary.

I think this was an error... (4.00 / 4)
Even though BlueHampshire has an editorial board, who presumably expend a lot of money and time keeping it running--- I think it was a mistake to endorse a candidate in a contested primary with two strong candidates.  This is primarily a collaborative forum, not an edited  publication with some comments at the end of the articles.

Ironically, (I believe) Katrina Swett and her campaign have posted more commentary on here than Annie Kuster & crew have.

You may have noticed (4.00 / 2)

False. (4.00 / 2)
From the diary:
Note: This endorsement represents the full and unanimous support of Blue Hampshire's managing editors and contributing writers: Dean Barker, Laura Clawson, elwood, Jennifer Daler, Mike Hoefer, and susanthe.
Nowhere in that statement do we claim to speak for the site users.

The decision to write one rather than six separate support diaries was made in part so that non-Kuster supporters would not have to see one after the other show up on the screen.  That would have been tedious and gratuitous at the same time.

And partly in response to Timothy as well: Nor is this at all out of custom from endorsements on other political blogs.  The Orange to Blue list on dKos, for example, doesn't stop any number of users from critiquing the endorsed or promoting different candidates in those races in comments and diaries.

I strongly disagree, Dean (0.00 / 0)
"Blue Hampshire Endorses Ann McLane Kuster" is the title of this diary.  Not "The Six Blue Hampshire Managing Editors and Contributing Writers Endorse Ann McLane Kuster".  There's a very big difference -- one that, as we all know, will not be recognized by non-Hampsters.  It feeds the impression that all of us liberal bloggers have made up our minds four months before the primary, and that serious debate on primary choices is not welcome here (your small-print disclaimer aside).  If you don't believe me, let's see how this is treated by the press on Sunday.

Despite my respect for you and your colleagues on this list, you do not speak for "Blue Hampshire" as a whole.  You built a diverse community, Dean, not a PAC that foists its unified political muscle behind individual candidates and interests.  Respect that.

(Dean -- sent you a longer email last night with other reasons why this is a bad precedent.)

I realize that this comment will arouse strong (and well-intended) opposition, and I respect that.  Unfortunately, I have to go to work now, so will be signing off until tonight.  My apologies for that.

[ Parent ]
No Apology (0.00 / 0)
This line of reasoning, as my father would say, is rich.

Above, the workhorses on this blog, not to mention the folks that keep the lights on; have come together to endorse a candidate. Lucikly, it is the same one that I know to be the best choice.

Yet, a handful of "site users" now humbly, hat in hand, appeal to the "blog gods" that it is unfair.

This is such a delicate velvet shiv.

The hint that individual rights have been trampled should not being taken lightly. Nor should it be forwarded in desperation.

I have yet to read the "Robert Rules" for blogs. But from what I can tell, a big part of this type of new media outlet is to shift thinking. It is a proactive, advocacy based medium.

The diary above is from the most influential aggregate on this particular site. We all know it. They know it, too. The fact that they are not shy about using it is admirsble, imho. Especially, when such an act matters most. What? "Blue Hampshire Endorses The Nominee!"? You're kidding, right?

Now I suggest that Swett supporters cobble together an endorsement of their own. It will be hard to match the gravitas of the unified advocacy of the the names on the masthead. But if the arguments are compelling enough, it surely will be persuasive.

Another route would be to find a high profile political personality to post an endorsement that Swett supporters could rally on. This sounds like the best way to go. Really wow the blog with a big name!

I actually know the perfect person for this. All of Blue Hampshire would see it and, mouths agape, utter "Wow."

We are interested in discussion on the merits of the candidates. If such an endorsement diary was written by an active and/or longtime member of the BH Community it would be front-paged. If the Swett campaign records an introduction video it will be front-paged. Anything written under either candidate's nom de plume will be front-paged.

I guess the good thing about all of us management types being "out" is that it will allow the community to judge us accordingly and hold us to high standards in regards to how we handle the discussion and community in the weeks ahead.

it might've been better.... (4.00 / 1)
It might have been a little better if it said "www.BlueHampshire.com board endorses Kuster."

Just like the NYT, Globe, and Monitor do, eh? n/t (0.00 / 0)

What ignorant crap. (0.00 / 0)
That's like claiming that a "New York Times Endorses Clinton" editorial is purporting to speak for everyone who subscribes to the paper or writes a letter to the editor.

In fact this endorsement is far MORE transparent than those in traditional media.

Interesting Perspective (0.00 / 0)
I didn't realize that BH was a newspaper - had assumed that it was a diverse forum to encourage debate and discussion of progressive values, one that never attempted to assert a common voice for an entire community. Silly me.

Tim's recommendation above -- that the title and signature of the diary make clear that this is the view of BH managing editors and contributing writers only -- is the responsible one.

I think my argument was pretty respectful.  I don't think it deserved your gratuituous insult, even if you disagree with the content.

DeJoie on Swett (4.00 / 5)
As I said back on May 4th, "Deciding to leave this race is the most difficult decision I have had to make. Supporting Katrina Swett is the easiest".

Having spent about 9 months on the campaign trail with each of these women, as well as knowing them for the better part of the past decade, I have a unique perspective on the race, and each of my former opponents.

My decision to support Katrina is based on the question of which candidate most closely supports the positions that I fought for on the campaign trail. For me, that person is Katrina.

While there are many important issues that we must confront, the issues most on the minds of voters in this district are jobs and the economy. The loss of jobs over the past decade and the wage erosion of working families during that same period has made this recession unbearable for many of the people that I call my friends.

12% of our friends and neighbors are unemployed or forcibly underemployed. Construction workers have seen unemployment in excess of 30%. These are the issues that we need to speak to. We ignore these issues at our own peril. This is one of the ways that Scott Brown won, by appealing to those working families who do not believe that democrats speak for them.

While both Anne and Katrina have spoken about jobs. The way that each speaks to the issue is important. When I have listened to Katrina she conveys an understanding of working family issues that I have connected to. While I was surprised, I shouldn't have been. Katrina was raised in a family where fighting for the underdog was the ultimate in public service. In fact her father, the late Congressman Tom Lantos, has the only 100% rating from the AFL-CIO.

It was and it is difficult to have left this race after 18 months of hard work. But I will be working hard for my friend and former opponent Katrina Swett. I would suggest whether you agree or disagree, that we raise the level of the dialogue to a frank discussion of the issues, and the differences between these candidates.

Clean Air (4.00 / 3)
John, could you make clear, what the hell Peter Sullivan is talking about?

While we're at it, maybe you can talk to the Kuster supporters who played some seriously sleazy games with John DeJoie over the last few months? I'm talking about stuff that went beyond the bounds of acceptable behavior and into the area of threatening John's livelihood. Classy stuff.

Peter is not the only one whispering this.

It would be helpful if you could shine some sunlight on this.

John would be happy to promote if you were to write it up as a diary.

A little late to the discussion, but (4.00 / 2)
I am a supporter of John DeJoie who now supports Katrina Swett for Congress.  To my mind, she best represents the issues facing working people.

I'm truly sorry that John had to leave the race, but happy with Katrina Swett as a candidate and will do everything I can to assure her nomination.

I'm not as regular a contributor to this forum as I would like to be, but I still am a part of it and will remain so, even though we disagree on this one.

PS You can't get rid of me.. who else would make all those dandy name tags?

Why do you say socialism like it's a bad thing?

perhaps (4.00 / 2)
Beth, you could write a diary about the reasons you support Katrina. None of her other supporters seem willing to step up to that particular plate. It would be a positive contribution to the site, and it would benefit your candidate.
